The Uttarakhand High Court has sought the reply of the state government over the delay in the construction of Indira Gandhi International Sports Stadium Complex at Haldwani.
The bench of Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice RC Khulbe directed the state and other respondents to file their responses on the following issues:
– Indicate as to how much money has been spent on the project.
– The reasons for project not being completed till date.
Further, the respondent no.7 (the authority which was entrusted with the task of completing the project) was asked to indicate definite timelines by when the work should be completed and the stadium should become completely functional and operational and the same would be inaugurated.
Essentially, the Court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) plea filed by Dushyant Mainali highlighting the shocking state of affairs with regard to the construction of Indira Gandhi International Sports Stadium Complex at Haldwani,
It was informed to the Court that the complex had been under construction for the last 15 years and still not completed and made operational. Further, the petitioner submitted that more than Rs.200 Crores have been spent on the project, yet the project has not seen light of the day.
It may be noted that this stadium has cricket and football grounds, a track for 800-metre race, a hockey field, badminton courts, a lawn tennis court, a boxing ring and a swimming pool.
It was meant to accommodate around 25,000 people at a time. A hostel for 150 sportsperson was also proposed to be built inside the stadium premises.
