MARQUETTE — Sixteen golfers participated in match play during the Labor Day weekend to whittle the field to one champion, Dennis Hruska, during the second part of the Men’s Club Championship at the Marquette Golf Club.
Playing on the club’s Greywalls course, Hruska won his record 14th club championship, extending a record he already held.
Except for defending champion Robert Luke, who gained an automatic berth into match play, 15 others including Hruska earned their way into match play with the lowest scores during a 36-hole qualifying round the previous weekend. K.C. Bjorne was the medalist of the qualifier with 149.
In the finals of match play on Monday, Hruska defeated K.C. Bjorne 1-up. Hruska took the same 1-up lead on the opening hole before Bjorne evened the match on hole No. 4. Hruska retook the 1-up lead two holes later and held off Bjorne the rest of the way, according to a report from the course.
In the opening round of match play, Hruska defeated Mike Marietta, Bjorne defeated Kenn Hruska, Luke defeated Scott Koski, Joe Negrinelli defeated Victor Harrington, Brett Specker defeated Dustin Hongisto, Ben Newhouse defeated Scott Prunick, Chris Rhoades defeated Chad Wester and Rick Rhoades defeated Dan Nygard.
In the next round, the quarterfinals, Dennis Hruska defeated Specker, Bjorne defeated Newhouse, Luke defeated Negrinelli and Rick Rhoades defeated Chris Rhoades.
Then in the semifinals, Hruska defeated Luke and Bjorne defeated Rick Rhoades for their places in the finals.
