LORDSTOWN — The Lordstown High School volleyball team got a huge win in a loaded Northeastern Athletic Conference on Wednesday.

The Pymatuning Valley Lakers (9-2) visited the Red Devils and Lordstown (6-6) pulled out the victory, 3-2, in a five-set classic.

The Lakers are second in the NAC behind Badger (10-1), with Mathews and Maplewood (7-2) tied for third. Pymatuning Valley dominated the first set, 25-14, against the fourth-place Devils.

“Coming into today, we knew that Pymatuning Valley was ranked No. 2 in our conference,” Lordstown coach Destiny Prusky said. “They beat us on their home court in our previous meeting. We came in with our heads held high. We never gave up. In the end, everything fell into place.”

After the rough start, Lordstown went on to win the second (25-16) and third (25-20) sets. The second set was tied 15-15 before Lordstown went on a 10-1 run to close it out. Senior captain Ava Spano put the finishing touches on the set by dropping the ball in just the right spot.

Lordstown senior Lexie Drewek (team-high 21 kills, 21 digs, 3 aces) showed off her all-around game when she powered the ball over the net to begin the third. Then, she had great touch on the ball as the set was tied 6-6.

“We knew we had to play our best to get the win today,” Drewek said with a smile. “PV is one of the top teams in our league. We’ve been struggling a little bit. Everyone really came together to help get this victory.”

They certainly did.

Sophomore Breah Johnson (3 aces) tapped the ball past a diving Angolia Wiser (22 digs) to put Lordstown up 17-9 in the third. Seniors Keirsten Marcy and Emily Millard (8 kills) helped the Lakers make it a little closer, but Lordstown senior Emily Knox (27 assists) helped ensure the third-set win.

The Lakers got back to business in the fourth set. Junior Zoe Kacvinsky’s kill put Pymatuning Valley up 11-7. The Red Devils responded and tied the set at 14. However, the Lakers went on an 11-3 run of their own, sparked by senior captain Allie Stokes (21 assists).

“Lordstown played extremely well tonight,” Pymatuning Valley coach Justin Smith said.

“We got off to a great start, but they took the momentum away from us. We let up. We lost our focus and intensity. Lordstown has gotten a lot better since the first time we played them.”

The fifth set was tied 5-5. Then, a spike from Lordstown junior Gentry Simmons gave Lordstown an 11-10 advantage. Great serving from Drewek held off the Lakers as the Red Devils prevailed, 15-12, in the final frame.

Prusky is in her first year coaching volleyball at Lordstown.

“It’s going pretty well, “ Prusky said. “Obviously, I still have a lot to learn. Luckily, I have a great group of girls. Everyone is very coachable. So, that helps all of us.”
