Hamilton takes pole in Formula One: Lewis Hamilton set the fastest Formula One lap ever to grab the pole position at the Italian Grand Prix, nudging Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas into second place by just 0.069 seconds on Saturday.
But Ferrari’s troubles deepened as both drivers failed to qualify inside the top 10 at the team’s home circuit for the first time since 1984, with Sebastian Vettel not even making it out of Q1.
Defending champion Hamilton raced around the 3.54 miles (5.79 kilometers) of asphalt at the so-called Temple of Speed in the fastest lap recorded in the sport at 164.267 mph (264.362 kph). That eclipsed Kimi Raikkonen’s one-lap record of 163.785 mph, set by the former world champion on his way to pole at Monza two years ago. (AP)
Hagan wins in NHRA double event: Funny Car driver Matt Hagan gave Don Schumacher Racing its 350th victory, beating teammate Jack Beckman in the final round of the Lucas Oil NHRA Summernationals — the rain-delayed July event completed during final qualifying Saturday for the DENSO Spark Plugs U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis.
Hagan raced to his second victory of the season, making a 3.919-second pass at 328.54 mph in a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat.
Justin Ashley raced to his first Top Fuel win, going 3.958 at 267.96 to beat T.J. Zizzo in the final round of the Summernationals. Pro Stock Motorcycle’s Matt Smith won the $25,000 Mickey Thompson Pro Bike Battle all-star bonus race, knocking off Scotty Pollacheck with a 7.244 at 175.75.
