Do you remember Deepika Padukone from Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani playing Holi from dusk till dawn, being so carefree? So, now you also want to dance on balam pichkari and all those Holi grooves. But worried about hair damage?
Well, while you’re gorging on gujiyas, dahi vadas, and pakoras to feast this Holi, take these precautionary steps to avoid any damage on your luscious locks. Because you know just how many chemicals go into those colours.
Wash and condition your hair before playing Holi
Wash your hair with a nourishing shampoo to hydrate and moisturise them. Then apply an adequate amount of a nourishing and hydrating conditioner–but don’t wash it off. Tie up your hair in a bun and go out to enjoy the festival of colours!
The conditioner will act as a barrier and will protect your hair from damages.
Opt for organic colours
Organic colours are advisable because they are chemical-free and also washes off easily. Chemical colours make the hair more delicate and prone to damage. They further cause the texture of the hair to become dry and rough.
But, if you don’t have organic colours, it is strongly recommended that you thoroughly rinse your hair with plain water to get rid of the dirt, dry colours, and chemicals. Also, be gentle with your scalp and hair.
Apply a mild shampoo, gently massage your hair and scalp, leave it for about 10 minutes and then rinse out the shampoo completely. Now, apply a rich conditioner that will help replenish the oil and moisture that are ripped away by the chemicals. For further nourishment, you can also apply oil in your hair and leave it overnight after Holi.
If the damage is extreme you can also opt for a hair masque for next.
Take extra care if you have chemically treated hair
If your hair is chemically treated and very dry, you need to be even more careful during and after Holi.
You must use a hair mask and leave it in the hair while you play Holi. Traditionally a good hair oil like coconut or olive oil an be massaged on the scalp and hair from roots to ends. Tie your hair up in a tight braid before stepping out. The oil hydrates and keeps the hair nourished while acting as a protective layer against those harsh colours.
“When the original hair is chemically treated, they are more sensitive and when the cuticles are damaged due to chemicals, the hair bonds are broken,” Chen explains why the extra care is required for chemically treated hair.
