COVID-19 silenced much of Omaha’s entertainment industry, but the intermission may soon be over thanks to $10 million in CARES Act funding approved by Douglas County commissioners on Tuesday.”In order to reopen safely, additional funding will be required to ensure that these facilities mitigate the risks to audiences and artists, provide PPE equipment to the staff and promote the new activities,” said Omaha Community Foundation President Donna Kush.The community foundation will distribute the funds among 13 organizations in the arts, culture and entertainment sectors around the metro.The biggest recipient of the funding is Omaha Performing Arts, who is expected to receive $1,952,231.”Since the middle of March we closed both the Holland Performing Arts Center and the Orpheum Theatre,” said Omaha Performing Arts President Joan Squires. “We have canceled over 400 performances and events so that’s several 100,000 people who haven’t come to our venues.”
