Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilizers, Mansukh Mandaviya, on Saturday stated that India, below the management of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has proven the world her “principles and intrinsic values of service to humanity” in the course of the Covid-19 pandemic by “not overcharging nations in need of medicines and vaccines”.

Mandaviya, who was talking on the inaugural ceremony of the Amrita Patel Centre for Public Health at Bhaikaka University in Karamsad in Anand, stated that India has created a “new world order” of serving humanity, at the same time as many international locations have been “hoarding medical supplies” in the course of the pandemic.

‘During the pandemic, India made it known to the world our sanskriti (values)… Head of several countries called the Prime Minister every day, requesting for supplies of Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin. It was due
to Modi’s management that after assembly the demand within the nation, we have been in a position to provide medicines to different international locations and help in the course of the pandemic…,” he stated.

Mandaviya added, “At that time, we just did not supply medicines but also showcased our values. It was such a time that no matter what price we would have charged, the world was desperate for medicines and would have paid. But even when many countries were hoarding medical supplies, India became the first country not just to supply medicine but also did not increase prices of these drugs that were in shortage abroad. We provided the drugs at the same price as we would otherwise, that is because of our culture. The world took notice and acknowledged India’s fight against Covid-19.”

The minister stated that whereas the worldwide airspace was shut in the course of the pandemic, flights landed in India to gather medicines. “Nearly seven flights per day landed in India to take back medicines to their countries… India created a new world order of sharing in trouble, forging a vaccine-friendship in times of medical emergency… India’s doctors, nurses and paramedic staff also chose their duty over their life. Over 13 lakh daughters and 35 lakh nurses continued to serve during Covid-19, this is the speciality of our medical system, it is ingrained in our intrinsic value of service. In several other countries, doctors and nurses refused to put themselves at risk…,” he added.

The Amrita Patel Centre for Public Health is about to supply publish graduate programmes in public well being. It has been named after Amrita Patel, former head of the National Dairy Development Board and a Padma Bhushan awardee. Her father was former Union minister Hirubhai M Patel.

“For women empowerment… it is a honour not only for Gujarat but also India that a public health centre is being named after Amrita Patel. This centre can lead by example…,” stated Mandaviya.

He added, “When I was coming here, I was reading about Amritaben’s achievements on Google. I thought that Amritaben must have only worked in cooperatives and the education sector here (Charotar). But I found out that she has been instrumental in setting up one of the most important schools named after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in New Delhi…”
