A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra island early Monday, the US Geological Survey reported. The epicentre of the quake was 48 kilometres (30 miles) south-southeast of town of Singkil in Aceh province, at a depth of 48 kilometres, USGS stated.

It occurred round 6:30 am native time (2330 GMT) and there have been no speedy reviews of casualties or main injury, nor was there a tsunami alert.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) gave the quake a better magnitude of 6.2, whereas the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre had a witness testimony saying the quake was “felt in Medan” — about 120 kilometres north-northeast of the epicentre.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic exercise on account of its place on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, the place tectonic plates collide.

On November 21, a 5.6-magnitude quake hit the populous West Java province on the primary island of Java, killing 602 individuals.

Most of the victims have been killed as buildings collapsed or landslides have been triggered.

One of Sumatra island’s deadliest quakes occurred on December 26, 2004, setting off an Indian Ocean tsunami that killed greater than 230,000 individuals together with victims as distant as Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.

That highly effective 9.1-magnitude quake triggered 30-metre (100-foot) waves that hit the shore of Banda Aceh on Sumatra.
