The US Geological Survey on Wednesday reported a powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake off New Zealand’s southern coast, close to the largely uninhabited Auckland Islands.

New Zealand’s GeoNet monitoring company stated the epicentre was 33 kilometres (21 miles) under the earth’s floor. There was no fast tsunami warning and no studies of harm on the New Zealand mainland.
