East Lansing has decided to move forward with moderate and high-risk sports for the fall season.
Football, boys soccer, volleyball and girls swimming and diving were reinstated by the school district Sunday, according to athletic director Nikki Norris
The decision came three days after the Michigan High School Athletic Association announced that all four sports would take place this fall and Governor Gretchen Whitmer gave the green light for competition to take place.
Norris said it was important for the school district to take everything into consideration and make an informed and intentional decision. Low COVID positivity rates and success in other states were factors.
East Lansing was one of five school districts from Greater Lansing that postponed sports last month due to COVID-concerns. Okemos, Holt, Haslett also postponed high and moderate-risk sports, while the Lansing School District canceled all sports and extra-curricular activities.
Some of those other school districts will soon be making their decisions on fall sports. Discussions have taken place in the last few days and Okemos will decide at a school board meeting Tuesday.
