AKRON – The 2021 TECHCORPShack will be Nov. 6 at The University of Akron. Students in grades 9-12 are invited to participate. No prior technology experience is required. In fact, one of the goals of the TECHCORPShack is to provide a safe and supportive environment where students can learn more about technology.
High school students from Summit, Stark, Portage and Medina counties can register for the TECHCORPSHack at bit.ly/21tchack. Technology professionals are needed as volunteers at the hackathon. To learn more, visit bit.ly/21tchvol.
The TECHCORPShack in Akron will be hosted by University of Akron and is sponsored by AT&T Ohio. This is the fourth year that AT&T has sponsored the TECHCORPShack.
Through the TECHCORPShack, students learn how to use a mobile app development tool and receive support and guidance from technology volunteers from the community, explained TECH CORPS National Executive Director Lisa M. Chambers. She said high school students will build mobile apps to solve real-world problems.
TECH CORPS works to ensure K-12 students have equal access to computer science and information technology programs, skills and resources that enhance early learning and prepare them for college, credential or career.
Holston Scholarship
recipients announced
MASSILLON – Seven Massillon High School graduates recently received scholarships from the Harriet C. Holston Scholarship Fund. The Holston Scholarships are for Massillon High School graduates who are attending or who will attend colleges, universities, nursing school, vocational or technical schools. Recipients are chosen on the basis of economic need and educational potential for further training, according to a news release.
Recipients of $242.86 each were Gianna M. Hatheway, Destiny M. Stevenson, Jaiden L. Mitchell, Charity M. Daly, Jonah B. Harter, Brandon L. Snedeker and Joshua S. Starcher.
Since the Holston Fund was founded in 1952, 297 students have been awarded a total of $236,014.
Stark has semifinalists for
National Merit Scholarships
Several Stark County students have been named semifinalists for the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. The high school seniors have the chance to win more than $30 million in scholarships. Winners will be announced in the spring.
Area semifinalists are: Leila Hamdan and Alex Yockey of Jackson High School, Braeden Paulus of Perry High School and Alex Corona of Louisville High School.
Stark State College sets open houses
JACKSON TWP. – Prospective students can learn more about the spring semester tuition deal of more than half off ($100 off per credit hour) at Stark State College’s upcoming open houses.
All are invited to the events set for 5-7 p.m. Thursday on the main campus, 6200 Frank Ave. NW, and Nov. 4 at Stark State Akron, 360 Perkins St.
Students and their guests can meet professors and admissions representatives, get help with the financial aid process, tour the campus, learn about student services and resources and explore program options.
