Emmy Award-winning, New York-based prodco Engel Entertainment has launched a documentary division that will specialize in the development and production of feature-length films.

The newly minted unit will operate under the joint leadership of senior vice president Jenna Helwig and indie filmmaker Dana Springer (pictured), who joined Engel Entertainment’s team as a co-executive producer in February.

Springer has previously exec produced a raft of award-winning feature docs, including Paper Tigers, United States of Detroit and California Typewriter. She also served as director of feature film Sea Change, produced in association with Engel Entertainment.

“Dana’s leadership will play a critical role in helping to grow this new division,” said Engel CEO and exec producer Steven M. Engel in a statement. “Her creativity and experience give her a unique ability to find and transform stories into powerful documentaries that resonate with our goals and values.”

The documentary division launches with a slate of titles including Lindsay Lindenbaum’s Tomboy, which was selected for the 2020 SXSW Film Festival. Shot over a five-year period, the 95-minute film follows four female drummers fighting to leave their mark in a male-dominated industry.

Also on tap is Jeff Bemiss and Lisa Molomot’s Missing in Brooks County, which will premiere at the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival in Arkansas this October.

An ITVS copro with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the 80-minute project follows the journey of two families searching for loved ones who have gone missing in Brooks County, Texas, approximately 70 miles north of the Mexican border.

Engel Entertainment has previously produced such critically acclaimed documentary films as the Emmy Award-winning A Walk to Beautiful and Sea Change. The producer has also overseen long-running Animal Planet hits North Woods Law and Lone Star Law; and A&E’s Alaska PD.
