Special meeting set for 1 p.m. Wednesday to vote on whether to have fall sports during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

After several school districts decided Monday that they will allow high school fall sports, the Erie School District is the final Erie County school to make the decision.

The Erie School Board will hold a special meeting Wednesday at 1 p.m. to vote on whether to have fall sports during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Erie School Board’s next scheduled meeting is Sept. 2, but District 10 put in a deadline of Wednesday for schools to tell the D-10 if they were in or out so regions and schedules can be made for the upcoming fall season.

Corry, Fairview, Girard and Millcreek all held board meetings in the Erie area on Monday night. Fairview superintendent Erik Kincade announced Monday morning that Fairview is going ahead with fall sports, which meant the board wouldn’t have to vote on the issue.

Girard superintendent Donna Miller informed the Times-News on Monday afternoon that Girard planned on going forward with fall sports. The board still held a vote and fall sports were approved by a 7-2 vote, while Corry never held a vote on the issue after approving the plan for fall sports at its last board meeting.

The Millcreek School Board heard from numerous residents, including athletes and coaches, on the issue of fall sports. After a long discussion about safety protocols and what fall sports would look like, board president John DiPlacido motioned to cancel fall sports. The motion received a second, forcing a vote, but the motion was defeated 7-2 with the other vote in favor of canceling coming from Michael Lindner.

In Crawford County, Conneaut School District residents flooded the school board meeting but were mostly kept outside because of Gov. Tom Wolf’s guidance of no more than 25 people inside a building at one time. Each speaker was allowed in once the previous speaker was done and left the building.

After nearly one dozen speakers, the Conneaut board went through the logistics of sports with athletic director John Acklin and decided to approve sports 9-0. The board also voted to delay the start of fall sports competitions by one week with girls volleyball starting on Sept. 17 and football on Sept. 18.

Also on Monday, the Crawford Central School Board approved fall sports for Cochranton and Meadville. Titusville approved fall sports last week, leaving Penncrest School District as the last Crawford County School Board to make a decision. Penncrest, which consists of Cambridge Springs, Maplewood and Saegertown, is scheduled to meet Wednesday night.

Warren County School District approved sports this past week, and on Monday the Franklin and Oil City school boards approved fall sports. Tidioute Charter is the only D-10 school to opt out so far.

In Mercer County, every school is in, except two that still must make a decision. The Sharpsville School Board meets Wednesday night and the Mercer School Board meets Thursday. Mercer was granted an extension on its decision by District 10.
