INDORE: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indore is developing a Centre of Futuristic Defence and Space Technologies (CFDST) to promote an ecosystem for defence and space sectors.
The institute plans to add a few basic courses for students willing to pursue a career in the field of defence and space.
Officiating director, professor Neelesh Kumar Jain said, “Defence and space sectors have a large potential of untapped research work. We are planning to introduce some basic courses in the sector for students besides the CFDST which will play a catalyst in creating an ecosystem and connecting students to the market.”
The institute said CFDTS, will function with the objectives to establish collaboration with defence and space organizations and help students find solutions for existing and futuristic technologies.
Jain said, “This centre will help create awareness among students and faculty members towards their contribution in development of defence and space technologies for nationbuilding thus creating a technology-enabled trained manpower as per the need of Indian defence and space sectors.”
As part of the programme, Ministry of Defence secretary Dr Ajay Kumar spoke on Indian Defence Industry – The Sunrise Sector in a webinar held on Wednesday.
Addressing students and faculty, Kumar said, “Defence unlike other sectors is relatively difficult to enter. One of the reasons is that defence technologies have always been a frontier technology-based on the requirements of armed forces. The continuous drive to be the best poses a challenge to technology developers. In other sectors, you can create technology and can use it later unlike in defence.”
Encouraging youngsters Kumar said, startups have shown the pace of doing things at a much faster pace as a result of which countries like the United States are coming to India to collaborate with our startups.
Talking about the difficulties in defence sector, Kumar said the absence of physical market forces as the government remains the main buyer of defence equipment.
“In India, one of the biggest hurdles is the dependencies we have created on public sector ecosystem. At some point of time because of its strategic nature it was felt that we should not have the private sector doing defence equipment,” said Kumar. Dr Santosh Kumar Vishvakarma, dean student affairs and associate professor at IIT Indore is leading the idea of formation of this center.
