Iconic Brisbane rock band Powderfinger has been touted as a likely option for the half-time entertainment at the AFL grand final next month, reports 7NEWS Melbourne’s Tom Browne.
The premiership decider will be moved to the Gabba this year, a decision made on Tuesday and set to be announced on Wednesday by the Queensland government and the AFL.
In addition to taking place outside Victoria for the first time, flow-on effects from the coronavirus pandemic will extend to the latest date and start time for a grand final in history.
The flag is set to be won under lights on Saturday, October 24.
The exact start time – including whether it will start in twilight or at night – will be confirmed on Wednesday.
But the stars are aligning for a fitting half-time performance by Powderfinger at the Vulture Street venue.
The band called it a day 10 years ago but came together in May for a live-streamed charity performance.
A new album is now on the way.
“We were in putting together ‘Odyssey Number Five’ 20th anniversary release and we went back and found like 50 songs that we had never released,” drummer Jon Coghill said on Double J this week.
“And we’ve got the 10 best, we think. There’s gonna be a new album this year at some stage.
“New songs. No one’s heard any of them. And it sounds pretty good to us. It’s been put together really well.”
With coronavirus travel restrictions in place, an Australian act is all but assured to perform at the grand final.
Tones and I, Dean Lewis and Paul Kelly performed at the 2019 premiership match, while the Black Eyed Peas and Jimmy Barnes featured in 2018.
Pre-match entertainment under the Melbourne sun has been followed by a post-game concert on a darkened MCG in recent years.
The Killers performed before and after the 2017 grand final, with Richmond star Jack Riewoldt famously singing ‘Mr Brightside’ alongside frontman Brandon Flowers.
