Right now, high school sports are set to start August 24, but medical advisers are recommending to push back the start further, despite calls from state leaders to start the season sooner.
“What people don’t understand is there’s a possibility we could probably go now, but what does a game look like? How many fans? Are the bands going to be there? The whole dynamics of athletics are going to change,” said Dan Talbot, District Athletic Director for Polk County Schools.
Talbot said he’ll be monitoring the FHSAA’s meeting closely Friday when they review the three options for fall sports.
One option is to start fall sports’ practice as planned on August 24, which Governor DeSantis supports. The second option is to delay the start until November, and the newly added third option is to start practice in October.
Talbot said many people may not realize the impact high school sports has on not only students, but school districts too.
School districts could potentially lose a lot of money if games are played without fans and students, especially seniors, could lose important scholarship opportunities if they’re not able to take advantage of their time to shine to college recruits.
“The good thing is, no one has said, lets just cancel sports. We’re going to fight to get these seasons in at some point and time. It may look a little different but the opportunity to play is what we’re shooting for,” said Talbot.
The board will meet at 10:00 a.m. Friday in Gainesville.
