The Ferndale Schools announced on Wednesday it will postpone the fall sports season, citing concerns of health and safety during the current coronavirus pandemic. Ferndale hopes the Michigan High School Athletic Association will decided to move all traditional fall sports across Michigan to the spring and give athletes the chance to potentially compete with less risk.
“It is with great sadness that we have to announce the postponement of our Fall Sports,” the district posted on its website. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic we do not feel that it would be appropriate to continue with sports in the Fall semester. Our hope is that the MHSAA will adjust the schedule of all activities to allow our student athletes to compete in traditionally Fall sports this Spring.
“We will share further details when we have them.”
No further comment was immediately available from the Ferndale athletic department. Ferndale competes in the Oakland Activities Association in northern Metro Detroit.
Last week, the Lansing School District became the first district in Michigan to cancel its entire fall sports season. Lansing School Board president Gabrielle Lawrence also expressed hope for fall sports getting postponed until the springtime.
“We are really hoping that our neighboring districts follow suit because we would love to be able to kind of shift the seasons around and allow kids the opportunity to compete in the spring,” Lawrence said. “But we recognize that would need to be, essentially, a regional effort.”
On Wednesday, MHSAA executive director Mark Uyl was interviewed by the talk radio program The Huge Show and he said moving fall sports into March, April and May is an option being discussed. In turn, that would push back traditional spring sports into May, June and July.
“In the model that some other states are looking at, especially those in the upper Midwest, if things have to get moved, you’re then probably looking at a redo of the fall in March, April, May, and then your spring sports with some overlap going May, June and finishing up in July,” Uyl said. “I think that’s as accurately as I can speculate right now, but just looking at a 30,000-foot view, that would be the most logical scenario right now.”
