NPR’s longtime Jerusalem correspondent Daniel Estrin has been overlaying the battle in Gaza virtually nonstop for the previous 5 months. In our first episode of a particular two-part collection, Daniel talks with Embedded host Kelly McEvers about a number of the folks he is reported on and the way he approaches overlaying this troublesome and divisive story.

“It is an almost constant sense of cognitive dissonance,” he tells Kelly.

One factor that stands out about Daniel’s reporting is the wide range of views he brings to air: the households of victims of the Oct. 7 assault, the household of one of many attackers, Israeli troopers, in addition to Palestinians inside Gaza with the assistance of NPR producer Anas Baba, who’s each reporting on the battle and attempting to outlive it.

Sometimes these views are sophisticated and nuanced. Other instances, individuals are simple of their beliefs. But taken collectively, they supply an even bigger image of the battle.
