Williamsport was able to capitalize off two Berwick turnovers and 13 penalties in a 26-7 win Friday night at STA Stadium.
Junior quarterback Frankie Morron tossed three touchdown passes, two of which went to Cam Sims.
It’s the first 3-0 start for Williamsport since 2017 and Berwick is 1-2 for the first time since 2011.
“We’re feeling great. Making money, taking money, we’re all feeling good,” Morrone said, “but we have to keep this up throughout the whole season. We can’t stop now.”
Williamsport jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter thanks to a 6-yard TD reception by Nassir Jones and an Elliott Wannop 27-yard field goal.
Berwick made it a 10-7 deficit when Mason Laubach had a 47-yard run with 9 minutes, 2 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
Williamsport increased its lead and took a 16-7 lead into the half when Sims caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Morrone with 3:44 to play.
“We’re not asking Frankie to be anybody but Frankie. He’s growing up,” Williamsport coach Chuck Crews said. “He got thrown to the fire last year and he would come off the field every series with his eyes wide open and his pupils dilated. This year he comes off and he’s mad because he missed something and he wants to go back to it. That’s progression that we want all our kids to make.”
Berwick’s defense made things tough for Williamsport’s run game as the Millionaires had just 99 yards on 27 carries. But the Millionaires picked up yards when necessary, like Keith Freeman’s 48-yard run to set up Sims’ second touchdown catch.
LOYALSOCK 55,
HUGHESVILLE 18
Naz Smith returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and the Lancers didn’t look back in a rout over Hughesville.
Loyalsock didn’t play the first two weeks due to COVID-19 issues.
Chase Cavanaugh ran for 79 yards and threw for 97, including a 50-yard touchdown pass to Brendan Clark, as Loyalsock accumulated 412 yards of offense.
Hughesville did have success running the ball, rushing for 199 yards on 42 carries.
“Overall, there were a lot of one-play drives and they flat-out played better than us,” Hughesville coach Adam Gehr said. “They didn’t do one thing that we didn’t prep for. We were ready, but they did a better job executing than we did.”
Loyalsock led Hughesville, 20-0, after the first quarter and scored 35 points in the second.
“We didn’t have much football communication the first week of quarantine. It was about moving forward academically, then psychologically, then the modicum of approaches for football,” Loyalsock coach Justin Van Fleet said.
JERSEY SHORE 55,
CENTRAL MOUNTAIN 7
Brandon Wheary threw for 183 yards and four touchdowns as Jersey Shore cruised to a win over Central Mountain in a meeting of undefeated teams.
The Wildcats had allowed just nine points in their first two games, but Jersey Shore’s offense proved to be too much.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter and led 26-7 at the half.
The Wildcats’ only touchdown came when Brett Gerlach hit Micah Walizer on a wheel route with 4:22 left in the second quarter.
“I thought defensively we dug in a bit after we gave up a couple scores in the first half,” Central Mountain coach Jim Renninger said. “Except for a couple players here and there, against their run game we were pretty good. I mean that’s a really good football team. They’re well coached.”
Central Mountain struggled moving the ball, especially in the second half. Jersey Shore recorded seven sacks and Dalton Dugan had four.
Cayden Hess scored a trio of touchdowns in the first quarter, catching a pair of passes from Wheary and returning an interception for a score.
MUNCY 56, CMVT 24
The Indians scored 42 first-half points and cruised past CMVT. Branson Eyer had 141 passing yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 37 yards and a score. Chase Crawley (75 yards) and Ross Eyer (74) led Muncy’s receivers.
CMVT didn’t attempt a pass the entire game, instead running the ball 34 times for 124 yards. Muncy outgained CMVT, 319-124.
The Indians scored 28 points in the second quarrter and Ty Nixon had 92 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
SOUTHERN 67,
WARRIOR RUN 0
Southern Columbia dominated Warrior Run, scoring 28 points in the first quarter.
The Defenders were held to just 39 yards of offense. Southern’s Gavin Garcia ran for 133 yards on just five carries and scored three touchdowns, including breaking a 75-yard run early in the second quarter.
Warrior Run was held to just 24 rushing yards on 31 carries.
“We certainly hoped to get more first downs than we got and hoped we’d be able to move the ball a little bit, but things just didn’t go right from the start,” Warrior Run coach Chris Long said. “We tried not to kick the ball to them on the opening kickoff, but it just didn’t go where we wanted it. We tried to throw some new looks and put some things on film that other teams might have to prepare for but they didn’t go too well against Southern Columbia.”
The Tigers led 28-0 after the first and took a 49-0 lead into the half.
NORTHWEST 42,
BUCKTAIL 6
Bucktail’s offense couldn’t find its footing in a loss to Northwest as the Rangers used long, time-consuming drives to keep the ball from the Bucks.
George May accounted for the first two touchdowns for Northwest to make it a 14-0 lead at halftime before the Rangers scored 21 points in the third quarter to put the game away.
Gage Sutliff scored the Bucks only touchdown on a 3-yard run with 2:55 left to play.
“I don’t know if there is too much speed coming at these guys, but we’re still not doing fundamental things correctly,” Bucktail coach Jared Hurlbert said. “We have a lot of young kids on the team and it just seems that if they have a bad play or we get a bad call, they start to hang their heads.”
SAYRE 35,
COWANESQUE Valley 14
Tucker St. Peter went 10 for 17 for 135 yards and a touchdown, but Cowanesque Valley mustered only two touchdowns in a loss to Sayre.
Cowanesque trailed 14-0 at the half. The Indians trailed the Redskins in total yards, 398-208.
DANVILLE 35,
LEWISBURG 14
Danville held a 14-point lead at halftime, but the Ironmen scored 14 in the third quarter to get some breathing room and held on to win by three scores.
Max Moyers led Lewisburg with 89 rushing yards and a touchdown and Ethan Dominick had 75 rushing yards for the Green Dragons.
Danville was led by K.J. Riley, who threw for 216 yards.
SHIKELLAMY 14, MILTON 0
Milton recorded just 90 yards of offense in the loss. Connor Fitzgerald scored on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Drew Balestrini to put Shikellamy ahead, 7-0, in the second quarter. Balestrini then scored on an 11-yard run in the third quarter for the 14-0 lead.
