Calling all families and friends to join Tamworth Borough Council’s Castle Summer Fest this weekend for a fun packed programme of free sports, live music and live screening of the Commonwealth Games and the Women’s Euro 2022 final.

 

Grab a partner and help Tamworth attempt to break the biggest piggyback world record this Saturday, July 30 at 1pm. (Meeting at the Castle Grounds Activity Centre, opposite the tennis courts). Participants should arrive 30 minutes before the start time so you can be counted.

 

The challenge is part of Tamworth Borough Council’s Community ‘Have-a-Go’ day, in the Castle Grounds which includes free sports and activities, a 5k fun run, boxing, zorbing, darts, volleyball, community acts, plus live music.

 

The record attempt application has been accepted for Tamworth to enter the biggest piggyback entry with a minimum distance of 100m. The current record is held by Scouts Australia involving 1,274 participants.

 

Registration is also open for the first Castle Summer Fest Fun Run, which will be held at 9am on Saturday, July 30. This will include a 1k children’s fun run for ages four to 14, starting at 11am. Both events are FREE to enter and will include medals for finishers. The runs are being organised by Tamworth Borough Council with support from local running groups the Peel Road Runners and Michy’s Marvels. Anyone joining is asked to register in advance. 

 

  • Free entertainment on Saturday continues from 1.30pm with live music from Bryan Brindley on the main stage, followed by The Lost Notes from 2.30pm. The evening will finish with coverage of the Commonwealth Games on the live screen until 10pm.

 

Everyone is also invited to watch the Lionesses in action at the Women’s Euro 2022 Final, which will be live screened on Sunday from 4.30pm for a 5pm kick off. Commonwealth Games will continue to also be broadcast throughout the day.

 

A huge variety of sport and entertainment activities has been planned for Castle Summer Fest during the next two weeks including demonstrations, taster sessions the UK’s largest inflatable obstacle course, concerts from world-renowned performers, screenings, broadcasts and much more.

 

Councillor Robert Pritchard, Deputy Leader of Tamworth Borough Council, said: “We thought it would be great fun to attempt the world record piggyback run as the perfect opportunity to get people involved in the celebrations for the Commonwealth Games theme and help us get Tamworth in the Guinness World Records. 

 

“And of course, we couldn’t miss the Lionesses in action at the Women’s Euro 2022 final, so that will also be shown on the large screens.

 

“There are lots of things happening that the whole family can get involved in and be part of the fun and games, plus FREE live music and screening of the sports throughout the weekend.”

 

Other attractions on the Castle Summer Fest line-up include world famous pop stars, the UK’s largest inflatable obstacle course, tribute shows, open air cinema and much more.
