Duke’s annual family weekend is just around the corner. Not sure what events to take your parents to? 

This year’s family weekend, which runs from Oct. 14 to 17, will see a return to in-person events after a virtual weekend last year. Traditional events, like “student for a day” lectures, shows and campus tours, are on the calendar. 

Sports.

If your parent is a Cameron Crazie, then you’re in luck. This year’s family weekend coincides with Countdown to Craziness, Duke’s signature kick-off to the basketball season. Students can get tickets to Friday night’s Countdown on Oct. 11 at 6 a.m. or wait in the walk-up line at Krzyzewskiville on Friday, Oct. 15 starting at 7 a.m.

Other sporting events include a Saturday viewing party for Duke football’s game against the University of Virginia. The party will take place at 12:30 p.m. at Wallace Wade Stadium. 

Men’s soccer will play against Clemson University Friday 7 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium, women’s field hockey against Syracuse University Saturday 12 p.m. at Jack Katz Stadium and women’s softball against East Carolina University Saturday 1 p.m. at Duke Softball Stadium. 

Tours

Guided and self-guided tours will also be offered across campus all weekend. Visitors can tour the Wilkinson Building’s art collection, the Nasher Museum of Art, Duke Libraries, Duke Gardens and the Lemur Center. Some require tickets that are available for purchase online.

Duke’s music department will hold concerts Friday and Saturday 8 p.m. in Baldwin Auditorium. Friday’s concert will feature the Duke Djembe Ensemble and Duke Jazz Ensemble. Saturday’s will include the Duke Chorale, Duke Symphony Orchestra and the Duke Wind Symphony. 

Brunch

If you’re looking to round out the weekend with Sunday brunch, Duke has options.

The Duke Catholic Center will be holding Mass and brunch at the Goodson Chapel at 8:30 a.m., the Chapel Ministry team will have coffee and pastries on the Chapel quad before morning worship at 11 a.m. and Jewish Life at Duke will have a bagel brunch at the Freeman Center at 10 a.m.

Marketplace will also host a special Sunday brunch for first-year students and their families starting at 10 a.m. 

Lectures

One “student for a day” lecture will feature discussions about how grief can be the foundation for resistance in Black music and Black cemeteries. The event, which will feature Adam Rosenblatt and Deonte Harris, both assistant professors of the practice in international comparative studies, is scheduled for Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Reynolds Theater in the Bryan Center. 

Another Friday lecture in Page Auditorium at 6 p.m. features Jim Yong Kim, former president of the World Bank Group, as he considers global policy leadership and methods to address the world’s policy issues.
