Panaji: Goa’s swimming and fitness trainer Joe Shafiq Costa Pereira clinched the top spot at the open online Coach Education Programme (CEP) conducted by Sports Authority of India in association with national sports federations for 22 disciplines.
The 39-year-old Margao resident secured A grade along with Ayush Dubey of Swimming Academy of Hyderabad in the swimming category exams post online programme.
There were 12850 coaches who registered for sports disciplines while 5680 took part in sports science sessions. For over a month, Joe spent five hours a day learning about the modern approach to sports.
“It was a grinding and detailed webinar on various aspects of sports. People used to think everything was done by an athlete and coach till the 1990s. However, things are not like that. The new millennium has opened our eyes to various aspects of training such as nutrition, physical trainer, training module and sports science,” said Joe.
The month-long webinar contained topics such as principles of strength training, resistance training program design, exercise prescription, physical and physiological changes in growing athletes, talent identification selection and development pathways for sports in India, growth and maturation in athletes and techniques on biometrics.
“This was by far one of the best platforms to learn and interact with the best in the world and to be aware of what the leading countries are doing, where we are lacking and how we could improve our standards,” he said.
