Gurgaon: Athletes in Gurgaon may soon have another stadium for practice, with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) working on a plan to build a new sports complex in Farrukhnagar at a cost of around Rs 4.7 crore.
The city has two government sports facilities at present — Tau Devi Lal sports complex in Sector 38 and Nehru stadium in Civil Lines. According to GMDA officials, the Farrukhnagar complex will have concrete courts for basketball and volleyball, grounds for handball and kho-kho, as well as a running track. In addition, it will have a multipurpose hall, a room for guards, paved roads, parking facilities and a micro sewage treatment plant.
The proposal for the stadium was put before GMDA’s core planning cell in a meeting earlier this week, where it was decided that the matter would be taken up at the next meeting of the Authority. In the meantime, the chief engineer of GMDA’s infrastructure-1 division has been directed to prepare a detailed report of the proposal for the meeting.
“The plan for the construction of a stadium is still under consideration and will be taken up at the next meeting of the GMDA. It hasn’t been approved yet,” said a senior GMDA official.
At present, Tau Devi Lal sports complex andNehru stadium are the only government facilities where athletes can hone their skills.
In the 1990s, Nehru stadium was an international cricket stadium. It was also one of the venues for the 1997 ICC Women’s World Cup. In 2003, Haryana’s first astro turf was laid at the stadium and, since then, it is primarily being used as a hockey stadium.
Tau Devi Lal sports complex, meanwhile, currently houses two international sports stadiums, one for cricket and another for football, as well as a volleyball and a basketball court.
In the next one year, GMDA intends to also create additional facilities at the complex, including a swimming pool, a shooting range, grounds for handball, football and kho-kho, a lawn tennis court, a skating rink, halls for yoga and aerobics and a jogging track, among other amenities.
Until 2008, high-level cricket matches were hosted at the cricket stadium, while football matches were hosted till 2011. Since then, however, it has largely been used for local tournaments.
TOI had last week reported that the complex may soon open its doors to residents of the city as GMDA is considering operating the facility along the lines of Delhi Development Authority’s sports complexes from next year.
At present, only athletes have access to the facilities at the sports complex, which is provided on the basis of recommendations made by the relevant coach for their sport. According to officials, as a part of this new mode of operation, just as in DDA sports complexes, residents will also be able to use the complex after payment of a fee or by seeking membership.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is also constructing a sports complex in Wazirabad, which will have facilities like a swimming pool, a shooting range and a basketball court, among others. It is expected to be completed by 2023.
