Just ahead of the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s decisions on medium-risk sports, a pair of school districts in Greater Lansing have made the choice to postpone those sports to the spring.

Haslett and Okemos each announced they were moving boys soccer, volleyball and girls swimming and diving to the spring amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Haslett announced its decision Wednesday evening, while Okemos revealed its plans Thursday morning.

The decision from Okemos comes a week after it gave the green light for its girls golf, boys tennis and boys and girls cross country teams to move forward with competition.

“These sports remain of significant concern due to the risk of exposure to COVID-19 and safety for our student-athletes and coaches,” a statement released by Okemos on Thursday morning said. “With practice and competition calendars upon us, it is imperative that we provide our students and families who participate in these sports with clear direction. Therefore, in addition to football, the Okemos Public Schools will postpone volleyball, swimming/diving, and soccer for the high school and middle school levels in favor of a spring season, should health conditions allow it at that time.

“The safety of our student athletes, coaching staff, families and community are our top priority, and we believe strongly that this is the best decision in that regard. While these sports cannot practice or compete currently, they are still approved for conditioning that meets established safety protocols so our students may have a place to develop skills and be a part of an organized school experience.”

Haslett also cited the safety of its student-athletes and coaching staff being one of its main reasons for postponing the sports at both the high school and middle school levels in favor of a potential shortened spring season.

“We believe that due to the potential risks, this is the best decision to keep all individuals associated with athletics safe,” Haslett’s statement said. “We understand the disappointment this will bring to our student athletes and their families. It is our hope we will be able to offer opportunities to compete when the risks are lower. Using our COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Plan as a guide, we will continue to re-evaluate our ability to continue conditioning for our student athletes.”

Haslett and Okemos are the latest districts in Greater Lansing to postpone some fall sports because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Lansing School District canceled all sports activity and extra-curricular activities for the fall earlier this month.

Last week, East Lansing announced it had postponed all activities until late September and Holt made the decision to postpone boys soccer, volleyball and swimming and diving until the spring.
