FOOTBALL

APPLETON NORTH 47, FOND DU LAC 7

FOND DU LAC – Stone Hulke returned two interceptions for scores and the Lightning got another touchdown off a fumbled punt return in its rout of the Cardinals at Fruth Field in a Fox Valley Association game.

Matthew Schecklman also had four touchdown passes, including two to Alex Heran, in the victory. But it was Hulke who set the tempo with his pick-sixes.

Hulke, a junior linebacker, returned one in the second quarter 28 yards for a score then tallied another pick-six, this time from 32 yards, in the second quarter.

Brock Salm also had the touchdown off the Fond du Lac fumble return just 58 seconds into the game for the Lightning (6-2 overall, 5-1 FVA).

North head coach Rob Salm feels his team played a complete game with the offense, defense and special teams performing at a high level.

“Before the game one of our goals was to play the complete game where all three phases are executing at a high level,” Salm said. “We felt like we’ve had times where we’ve been good on offense, really good on defense, really good on special teams but never really put it all together and to be that elite team to take the next step, we feel like we need all that happening at the same time.

“And to do that against Fond du Lac, that’s a big deal. They may be young, but they’re well-coached and a very good team. To execute and have that success and to start it early, was real nice tonight.”
