SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Kyren Williams raced 91 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter and No. 11 Notre Dame held off Sam Howell and upset-minded North Carolina 44-34 on Saturday night in a game that had over 1,000 yards in offense. Williams ran for a career-high 199 yards on 22 carries to help the Fighting Irish improve to 7-1 with their third straight victory, The Irish won despite being outgained by the Tar Heels (4-4) in total yardage, 554-523. But the Irish outrushed the Tar Heels 293-223. Howell, who became the Tar Heels’ first quarterback with over 10,000 passing yards, finished with 341 yards on 24-of-31 passing with one touchdown and one interception. He added another 101 yards on 18 carries, one a 31-yard touchdown run.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Sam Hartman continued his recent tear by accounting for five touchdowns to help No. 13 Wake Forest beat Duke 45-7 on Saturday. That gave the Demon Deacons their best start in program history. Hartman threw for 402 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 61 yards and two scores. That helped the Demon Deacons reach 8-0 for the first time, including 5-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Mataeo Durant ran for 103 yards to lead the Blue Devils, who fell to 0-4 in the ACC. Duke was coming off a shutout loss at Virginia before an open week.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Tyler Allgeier rushed for a career-high 266 yards and five touchdowns, leading  No. 25 BYU to a 66-49 victory over Virginia. Jaren Hall threw for a career-high 349 yards and three touchdowns. Hall also ran for 42 yards and another score. The Cougars (7-2) pulled away after scoring 21 points off three turnovers.  Brennan Armstrong threw for 329 and four touchdowns to lead Virginia, but also tossed a pair of interceptions. Armstrong added 94 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 11 carries. He left late in the fourth quarter after sustaining an apparent rib injury. The loss snapped the Cavaliers’ four-game win streak. BYU and Virginia combined for 1,322 yards and 115 points. 

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Miami freshman Tyler Van Dyke threw for 426 yards and three touchdowns as the Hurricanes beat No. 17 Pittsburgh 38-34. Van Dyke outdueled Pitt star Kenny Pickett. Pickett threw for a school-record 519 yards and four touchdowns but also threw two interceptions. His second pick ended a potential go-ahead drive in the fourth quarter. Miami improved to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the ACC with the win. Pitt dropped to 6-2 and 3-1.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Devin Leary threw three of his four touchdown passes in the fourth quarter as North Carolina State’s offense finally got untracked in a 28-13 win over Louisville. It was part of a 17-point fourth quarter for the Wolfpack. N.C. State had only 189 yards of total offense through three quarters. Malik Cunningham was 11-for-28 passing for 219 yards with a touchdown and interception for Louisville. He also gained 76 yards rushing on 18 carries.

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Will Shipley ran for two touchdowns, including the game-winning 21-yard score with 2:53 left, as Clemson rallied past Florida State 30-20 for its 32nd straight victory at Death Valley. Shipley finished with 124 yards. His final score put the Tigers back on top after Florida State took the lead with Jermaine Johnson’s 6-yard fumble recovery touchdown for a 20-17 lead in front a stunned crowd. But the Tigers offense regrouped after an awful second half to find the end zone and beat Florida State for a sixth consecutive time. 

ATLANTA (AP) — Tre Turner caught seven passes for a 187 yards and one score to lead Virginia Tech to a 26-17 win at Georgia Tech  as the Hokies snapped a three-game losing streak. Georgia Tech toyed with a comeback in the second half, but couldn’t overcome a first half in which the Yellow Jackets allowed Virginia Tech – the next-to-last ranked offense in the conference at 329.7 yards per game – to match that yardage on the way to a 20-7 lead.

UNDATED (AP) — Now, it’s time to talk about Jim Harbaugh. There has not been much discussion about what is usually the most-discussed coach in college football as Michigan ran out to a 7-0 start. The thing is, with Harbaugh, the failures are all that seem to matter. And there was another one Saturday against Michigan State. Elsewhere, the Southeastern Conference commissioner was talking College Football Playoff expansion and teams around the country made the case to be No. 2 behind Georgia when the selection committee releases its first rankings Tuesday.
