UNDATED (AP) — Never in the seven-year history of the College Football Playoff has the selection committee’s first top four exactly matched that of the AP Top 25 that directly preceded it. The latest Associated Press college football poll presented by Regions Bank makes it highly unlikely this year will be the first. Georgia remained No. 1 in the AP Top 25 on Sunday and looks like a lock to be first in the committee’s rankings Tuesday night. Cincinnati stayed at No. 2 on Sunday in the media poll and the chances of the CFP rankings going in that direction and pretty much zero. The selection committee has never ranked a team from the Group of Five higher than No. 7 in any of its rankings.

UNDATED (AP) — Long kickoff returns came in bunches over the weekend. Four players ran back kicks 100 yards Saturday. That’s most in a single day since there were five maximum-distance returns Oct. 31, 2015. Two occurred in the same game. SMU’s Bryan Massey ran back the second-half kickoff against Houston and the Cougars’ Marcus Jones went all the way with 17 seconds left to produce his team’s 44-37 win. BYU’s Tyler Allgeier had 266 yards against Virginia for the top rushing performance. Caleb Williams’ six touchdown passes for Oklahoma against Texas Tech were most by a freshman since 2016.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — TCU and football Gary Patterson have mutually agreed to immediately part ways. The announcement came Sunday night, a day after the Horned Frogs lost 31-12 at Kansas State, the 61-year-old Patterson’s alma mater. They are 3-5 after their fifth loss in six games. Patterson leaves TCU with a 181-79 record in 21 seasons, including an undefeated 13-0 season in 2010 that was capped by a Rose Bowl victory. Former Minnesota coach Jerry Kill, who was the best man in Patterson’s wedding and on his staff as an off-field special assistant, will be the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The Horned Frogs host 14th-ranked Baylor on Saturday.

UNDATED (AP) — Michigan State has moved up to No. 5 in The Associated Press college football poll and Wake Forest is a top-10 team for the first time in school history. Georgia is a unanimous No. 1 for the fourth straight week in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank. The rest of the top four was unchanged from last week, with Cincinnati at No. 2, Alabama at No. 3 and Oklahoma at No. 4. The Spartans jumped three spots by beating Michigan. The last time Michigan State broke into the top five was 2015. In the final AP poll before the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season, Ohio State slipped to No. 6 and Oregon was seventh. No. 8 Notre Dame, Michigan and Wake Forest rounded out the top 10.
