TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Washington defensive back Alex Cook has been carted off with an apparent neck injury after a big collision against Arizona. Cook was in on a tackle in the final minute of the fourth quarter and stayed down. Washington’s medical staff rushed onto the field, held him still and began checking his neck. Washington’s players and coaches, along with several from Arizona’s sideline walked onto the field as trainers carefully strapped him to a stretcher. Cook was placed on an ambulance gurney and lifted onto a cart. Several Huskies patted Cook and fans clapped encouragement as he was driven into the tunnel.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Dylan Morris threw two second-half touchdown passes and Washington rallied to extend the nation’s longest losing streak to 19 games with a 21-16 win over Arizona. Washington stumbled through the first half and was down nine before rallying behind Morris in the fourth quarter. The Huskies’ beleaguered quarterback hit Terrell Bynum on two long passes to set up two scores and Washington’s defense shut down Arizona after being hit with big players earlier. Arizona seemed to be on its way to ending its school-record losing streak, taking a 16-7 lead into the fourth quarter before imploding. The Wildcats’ offense stalled and the defense buckled after dominating the first half, leaving them winless since December 2019.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Southern California plays at No. 13 Notre Dame on Saturday night. The Trojans are just 3-3 this season and playing for an interim coach, but they are 2-0 on the road. The Fighting Irish are 5-1 despite questions on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Both teams could end up playing two quarterbacks. One matchup worth watching: Star receiver Drake London of USC going up against the Notre Dame secondary led by star safey Kyle Hamilton.

UNDATED (AP) — The last three weeks have featured a team ranked in the top three of the AP college football poll losing to an unranked team. That streak will be tough to extend in Week 8. No. 1 Georgia is off. No. 2 Cincinnati is a four-touchdown favorite at Navy and No. 3 Oklahoma is favored by more than five touchdowns against Kansas. The best game of the week is taking place in the Pac-12 with No. 10 Oregon visiting UCLA and former Ducks coach Chip Kelly. Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickets gets the chance to make a Heisman case against Clemson.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA coach Mick Cronin is a winner even before the college basketball season starts next month. A 3-year-old filly co-owned by Cronin won the $63,000 feature at Santa Anita by three-quarters of a length on Friday. Sent off at 6-1 odds, So Very Smart paid $14.40, $6.40 and $8.20. The victory was worth $37,800 and increased the filly’s career earnings to $84,860. She has two victories in seven starts. Cronin’s Boom Racing owns the filly in partnership with three other stables.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — When No. 10 Oregon got Kayvon Thibodeaux back for the second half against California, the standout defensive end helped rally the team to a vital win with a goal line stand. The Ducks hope it might be an omen for how the second half of their season will play out, with several injured starters expected to return for a critical game at UCLA on Saturday.

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Washington State plays the first game of the Jake Dickert era when the Cougars host BYU on Saturday. Dickert is the defensive coordinator who was elevated to acting head coach after Nick Rolovich was fired for refusing to comply with the governor’s mandate that all state employees be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Washington State has won three straight Pac-12 games even amid the turmoil created by Rolovich’s situation. The game Saturday is the final nonconference contest of the regular season for Washington State, which has hopes of qualifying for a bowl game. 

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona played its worst game under first-year coach Jedd Fisch in a 34-0 loss to Colorado that left the Wildcats searching for answers. Their bid to end a school-record 18-game losing streak doesn’t get any easier this week. The Wildcats have to face Washington and they’ll do it after losing two starting quarterbacks to season-ending injuries in consecutive weeks. Will Plummer will start against the Huskies after Gunner Cruz and Jordan McCloud were injured the past two games. The Huskies are coming off two close losses.
