Monsignor Farrell (5-2-1) fell behind 1-0 early in last week’s contest against host Archbishop Molloy, and battled through the first half on a very sloppy surface at Alley Pond Park in Queens.

Following some halftime adjustments, the Lions created numerous chances in the second half — the first of which came in the 55th minute when Dorian Papraniku sent Joe Commisso behind the Molloy defenders before he drilled a screamer to the lower right corner for the equalizer.

Ten minutes later, Aiden Sivio put a beautiful ball over the top to Rinor Okshe, who hit a rocket in the upper left corner to give Farrell a 2-1 lead.

At the 70-minute mark, Molloy managed to knot things up at 2-2, where the contest remained.

Farrell controlled the remaining 10 minutes and had a number of chances but were unable to get the game winner. Okshe had a late goal called back for offsides.

Farrell sits in 2nd place in the CHSAA AA Division. The Lions are back in action next week in Oakwood on Tuesday against Christ the King and on Wednesday in a huge rematch with first place Xavier.

CHSAA VOLLEYBALL

Notre Dame Academy picked up four wins last week — topping the likes of St. Joseph-by-the-Sea (3-1), St. Catherine’s (3-1), Sacred Heart (3-0), and St. Jean Baptiste (3-0).

The Gators, thanks to the outstanding play of captain Brooke Manning, now stand at 7-0 on the season.

“The team has been firing on all cylinders, getting full team efforts every single game while staying undefeated,” said coach Brian Fourman. “We have been getting amazing play out of our captain Brooke Manning. She is a leader on and off the court and everything has been going through her.

“Whether it’s offensively, defensively or serving. She’s been our go-to the entire year and we hope we can continue to rely on her the during the homestretch of the season,” he added.

Senior Brooke Lavelle has paced the offense, while Elena Digiacomo has been holding down the fort on defense.

Moore Catholic dropped a pair of 3-0 decisions to Sea and Dominican last week.

Samara Vazquez (15 assists), Kimmarie Taylor (10 kills and 3 aces), Alena Anazagasty (5 aces, 15 digs) and Sam Deleon (5 kills and 7 aces) excelled in defeat.

The JV suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of Sea, but captured its first-ever set in defeat.

Ashley Mojica, Fiona Rooney and Kayla Cammayo teamed for six aces in the loss, while Madison Sessa added 3 kills.

On Friday the school will host its Annual Breast Cancer Awareness game. Moore Catholic will donate all proceeds from the game to the American Cancer Society.

Staten Island umpire Dr. Vince Maligno made an observation at a local softball game which made rounds in this month’s Referee Magazine after Tottenville’s catcher sported a sticker on her helmet which read ” I heart umpires”.

“In my 53 years of umpiring, I have never seen anything like it,” said Maligno. “I know catchers sometimes try to get the best of the home plate umpire, but this beats it in my opinion.”
