HS Sports Notebook: NDA opens volleyball season with a thriller; soccer season heats up and more

Notre Dame Academy opened its volleyball season with a thrilling, 3-2 come-from-behind victory over rival St. Joseph Hill over the weekend. After dropping the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-18, the Gators rallied to capture the third and fourth sets (25-21, 25-16) before edging the Hilltoppers 15-13 in the fifth and final stanza.

Brooke Manning, Brooke Lavelle, Elena Digiacomo, Caitlyn Halloran, Madison Romeo and AnnaBella Zito led the charge.

NDA followed up with a 3-0 straight sets (25-3, 25-11, 25-5) victory over Cristo Rey. The JV also won.

On Sunday, both the JV and varsity programs ran in the Michael’s Cause 5k run for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at Ocean Breeze.

BOYS’ SOCCER

St. Joseph-by-the-Sea 7, Salesian 1

Team captains Kenny Granowski and Rory Lilley led the way with separate hat tricks, while sophomore Jonathan Williams tallied the extra point at the end as Sea improved to 3-0 on the season.

Granowski’s two first-half goals, along with one from Lilley via an assist from Aidan Hayes, powered the Vikings to a 3-1 halftime advantage.

John Williams, Matt Santamaria and Domenico Lupoi dished out assists, while goalie Aidan Dertinger also tallied one — his 60-yard outlet pass to Lilley set up a breakaway score.

Junior centerback Mossimo Giunta, fullbacks Ryan Gilles and Fabian Medina, along with midfielder Anthony Taravella led the defensive charge.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Staten Island Academy 5, Stony Brook 0

Kelly Gallagher, who netted a hat trick, opened up the scoring for the Tigers in the third minute off a cross from Madison Pillarella .

Olivia Schmitt and Eleni de la Cruz tallied one goal apiece.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Staten Island Academy suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Avenues .

Alissar Dalloul and Nicole Rossilli each claimed victories in first and second singles, respectively, but SIA dropped both doubles matches, as well as third singles.

Dalloul, a junior, won her first match as the team’s No. 1 singles player.

SIA falls to 0-2.

JV football

St. Peter’s 31, Xaverian 0

Quarterback Marco Aruta, tailbacks Brody Turnbull and James Gioia, and wide receiver Joe Laureano each found the end zone in the non-league victory.

Linebackers Jaymel Washington, Joe Jakubaukus and Frank Langello, as well as nose guard Gabe Hoffler, led the defensive charge.

The 2-0 Eagles will meet Chaminade this weekend.
