May 1 (UPI) — Nearly 300 folks have been arrested following violent clashes between protesters and police spanning a number of cities in France on Monday.
The annual May Day marches coalesced with the continued anti-government protests stemming from President Emmanuel Macron‘s controversial pension reform law. The regulation raises the authorized age of retirement from 62 to 64.

An estimated 108 law enforcement officials have been injured as some protesters hurled Molotov cocktails and different projectiles, The Guardian reported. Police, armed with helmets and riot shields, tried to disperse violent demonstrators with tear gasoline. At least 291 folks have been detained.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin tweeted that almost all demonstrators have been peaceable.
“If the vast majority of demonstrators were pacifists, of course, in Paris, Lyon, and Nantes in particular, the police face extremely violent thugs who came with one objective: to kill cops and attack the property of others,” Darmanin tweeted. “This violence must be condemned without reservation.”
The ire over the regulation has not eased within the months following the pension reform regulation being launched.
