The PC market collapsed throughout the fourth quarter of 2022, analysts stated, with an unprecedented drop in gross sales because of inflation and different components.
IDC reported that PC unit gross sales fell by 28.1 p.c to 67.2 million items, whereas Gartner stated that gross sales fell by 28.5 p.c to 65.3 million items. (IDC is owned by International Data Group [IDG], which owns PCWorld.) According to Gartner, the drop is the biggest because the agency started its PC protection within the mid-Nineteen Nineties.
Analysts blamed an ideal storm of pandemic-related points. “The anticipation of a global recession, increased inflation, and higher interest rates have had a major impact on PC demand,” stated Mikako Kitagawa, the director analyst at Gartner. “Since many consumers already have relatively new PCs that were purchased during the pandemic, a lack of affordability is superseding any motivation to buy, causing consumer PC demand to drop to its lowest level in years.”
Still, IDC famous that 2022 shipments have been effectively above pre-pandemic ranges at 292.3 million items for the total 12 months. Consumers purchased up PCs at report charges in 2020 and 2021, however declined to improve these comparatively new PCs.

“Consecutive quarters of declines clearly paint a gloomy picture of the PC market, but this is really all about perception,” stated Ryan Reith, group vp with IDC’s Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, in a press release. “2021 was near historic levels for PC shipments, so any comparison is going to be distorted. There’s no question when we look back at this time that the rise and fall of the PC market will be one for the record books, but plenty of opportunity still lies ahead. We firmly believe the market has the potential to recover in 2024 and we also see pockets of opportunity throughout the remainder of 2023.”
Both companies named Lenovo, HP, and Dell as the highest three worldwide PC distributors for the fourth quarter, although all suffered drops within the variety of PCs bought by nearly 30 p.c. Lenovo ended the 12 months with a 23 p.c market share, adopted by HP (19.6 p.c) and Dell (16.1 p.c), based on IDC. Apple (7.5 p.c) and Asus (4.8 p.c) rounded out the highest 5, IDC stated, although Gartner agreed with the rankings as effectively. Gartner believes that the decline in shipments will persist throughout 2023.

The U.S. PC market recorded its sixth straight quarter of declining shipments. HP, Dell, Apple, Lenovo, and Asus ended the 12 months as the highest 5 PC distributors.
“Even as vendors offered deep PC discounts during the holiday season in an attempt to lower inventory, consumers were not swayed to spare their money,” Kitagawa stated.
