AHMEDABAD: A family has approached the Gujarat high court after the youngest of its children, a 19-year-old girl, allegedly eloped with a neighbour, who is not only married but has got grandchildren too.
The family, hailing from a village in Sidhpur taluka of Patan district, moved the HC last month after their efforts to lodge an FIR against the man, who is in his forties, did not yield any result.
The teenage girl’s brother filed a habeas corpus petition complaining that the police took the case very casually even as the family feared that the girl was forcibly abducted and detained by their neighbour, Shovanji Thakor.
During the hearing on June 22, petitioner’s advocate Kishore Prajapati reiterated the anxiety of the family members and submitted that Thakor’s eldest daughter is married and has children too.
He urged the court to direct cops to bring the teenager back and produce her before the court, freeing her from the man whose daughter is older than the teenage girl he has allegedly abducted.
Cops did not register FIR against Thakor for kidnapping
The lawyer submitted before the HC that after the teen’s disappearance on June 2, the family came to know about the possibility that Thakor might have abducted her. The family members approached Kakoshi police station, which took three days to record a ‘Janva Jog’ or application of complaint about the missing girl. The cops did not register FIR against Thakor for kidnapping as the girl was not a minor.
When the petition was filed, the family expressed apprehension that the girl’s life might be in danger or she might be sexually abused. The allegations led the high court to order cops to present the girl before it through video conferencing on June 29. During the next hearing, the cops reported to the HC about efforts undertaken to trace the girl. The state government wanted more time to trace the girl. The court has granted time till July 13 and directed the cops to produce the girl through video conferencing from a nearby court.
The HC has asked the Patan SP to remain present before the court through videoconferencing with action taken report in case the corpus is not found by July 13.
