Udhayanidhi, the Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs in Tamil Nadu and son of CM M Ok Stalin, had mentioned: “We can’t oppose dengue, mosquitoes, malaria or corona, we have to eradicate them. In the same way, we have to eradicate Sanatana (Sanatan Dharma), rather than opposing it.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday hit out on the Opposition’s INDIA alliance over DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remarks on “Sanatan Dharma”. The BJP has accused him of calling for the eradication of Sanatan Dharma, the teachings of Hinduism, and equating it with illnesses like “dengue, malaria and Covid-19,” at a press convention in Chennai on Saturday.

“I have been observing the INDIA alliance for the past two days. You [Opposition alliance] want power? But at what cost? For the past two days, you have been insulting this country’s tradition, this country’s history, Sanatan Dharma,” Shah mentioned whereas addressing a gathering through the launch of ‘Parivartan Yatra’ from Dungarpur in Rajasthan.

“The two main parties of the INDIA coalition, Congress and DMK — the son of a finance minister and son of a chief minister — have been saying that Sanatan Dharma should be eradicated,” Shah continued.

“To do appeasement and vote-bank politics, these people have insulted the Sanatan Dharma,” Shah added.

Continuing to take a jibe on the Opposition-led alliance, Shah mentioned, “Today, the UPA government and Congress leaders say that if Modi wins, the rule of Sanatan Dharma shall prevail. Sanatan Dharma rules the heart of the people, no one can remove it.”

A day after the feedback sparked a row, Udhayanidhi denied that he known as for any “genocide”, as alleged by BJP chief Amit Malviya, and stood by his declare that Sanatan Dharma “divides people in the name of caste and religion” and wanted to be “uprooted”.

“Let me reiterate the crucial aspect of my speech: I believe, like the spread of diseases like Covid-19, Dengue, and Malaria by mosquitoes, that Sanatan Dharma is responsible for many social evils,” he wrote.

Earlier within the day, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) IT cell chief Amit Malviya slammed Udhayanidhi for his remarks, saying that the minister was calling for “genocide of 80% population of Bharat, who follow Sanatan Dharma.”

DMK Joint Secretary and Spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai, nevertheless, mentioned that the previous’s assertion has been “twisted” and “taken out of context.”
