China to combat ‘illegal activities’ in the South China Sea
- Without vying much attention of South-East Asian countries, China has discreetly initiated a maritime law enforcement initiative aimed at enhancing marine environmental protection and combating “illegal activities in key areas”, including offshore oil exploration as well as shipping and related operations.
- The US-based Diplomat magazine, in its report, said that China’s Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Ministry of Transport and China Coast Guard, in a joint statement released on April 1, had announced the commencement of an eight-month-long “Bihai 2020” (or “Blue Sea 2020”) initiative.

Dozens killed in IS, regime clashes in Syria: Monitor
- Clashes between Russia-backed Syrian regime forces and the Islamic State group have killed more than 50 fighters on both sides in two days, a Britain-based war monitor said on Saturday.
- Fighting and Russian air strikes in the central desert province of Homs since late Thursday have claimed the lives of 20 pro-government fighters and 31 jihadists, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
Iraq’s air defence systems intercept rocket targeting US Embassy in Baghdad
- The air defence systems in Iraq have intercepted a rocket targeting the US Embassy in Baghdad.
- Al Arabiya reported that a patriot battery system had responded to the rocket but could not intercept it far enough and, hence, fell within the Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone.
IAF ramping up deployment in key bases along border with China
- The Indian Air Force is significantly enhancing deployment of its frontline jets, attack helicopters and transport fleet in all its key bases guarding the airspace along the Line of Actual Control in view of heightened border tension with China in eastern Ladakh, people familiar with the development said on Saturday.
- The IAF has also pressed into service a fleet of C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft as well as C-130J Super Hercules in transporting heavy military equipment and weaponry to several forward bases to further ramp up India’s military preparedness in the region.
- The IAF is also using its Ilyushin-76 fleet to transport troops to various areas along the Line of Actual Control, the 3,500 km de-facto border between India and China, the people cited above said.
- They said the force has already moved a sizeable number of its frontline Sukhoi 30 MKI, Jaguar, Mirage 2000 aircraft to several key air bases including Leh and Srinagar.
- It has also deployed Apache attack choppers and Chinook heavy-lift helicopters to transport troops to various forward locations.
US aircraft carriers conduct drills in South China Sea
- Two US aircraft carriers have carried out drills in the South China Sea, a US Navy spokesman said Saturday, after the Pentagon expressed concerns over Chinese military exercises around a disputed archipelago.
- The USS Nimitz and USS Ronald Reagan conducted dual carrier operations in the waterway to “support a free and open Indo-Pacific,” the spokesman said.
- “These efforts support enduring US commitments to stand up for the right of all nations to fly, sail, and operate wherever international law allows,” he added.
- The drills came as the Pentagon said it was “concerned” about Chinese military exercises in the South China Sea, warning the manoeuvres will “further destabilise” the region.
- China’s expanding military presence in the contested waters has worried several of its neighbours.

Roll back imposition of tax on disability pension of defence forces
- Leader of Congress party in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a review and roll back the decision of the imposition of tax on disability pension of defence forces including Army, Navy, and Air Forces.
- “I must appreciate your visit to the army hospital (crisis expansion capacity of 100 beds) at Leh where scores of Indian soldiers have been admitted who have sustained grievous injuries during their valiant fight against Chinese intruders at Galwan Valley,” said Chowdhury in a letter to the PM.
- He cited that 20 Indian soldiers including commanding officer also had attained martyrdom on the fateful night of June 15. He insisted that some of them, god forbids, may also be disabled.
- “In future how would those disabled army personals earn and run the livelihoods? Disability pension comes as succour to those brave soldiers,” he added in the letter.
