Five suspected rebels were killed Thursday in a gun battle with soldiers in Indian-administered Kashmir, the army said, with reports later of gunfire across the border with Pakistan.

India’s Border Security Force (BSF) reported an exchange of gunfire, accusing Pakistani troops of starting “unprovoked firing” which was “befittingly retaliated”.

The skirmish began earlier on Thursday near the Line of Control, India’s border with Pakistan, the Indian army’s Chinar Corps said on X, formerly Twitter.

The Chinar Corps, which is posted in the disputed region, said that the five rebels killed belonged to the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The army said “an infiltration bid” had been “foiled by alert troops” in the Kupwara area of Kashmir, and that troops had seized assault rifles.

The deaths are the latest violence in the restive Muslim-majority region, which is also claimed by Pakistan.

India accuses its neighbour of fuelling attacks, claims that Pakistan denies.

A violent insurgency beginning in 1989 in Kashmir killed tens of thousands of people including Indian troops, militants and civilians.

Deadly battles between security forces and rebels have been less common in the years since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government stripped the region of its limited constitutional autonomy in 2019 and imposed direct rule.

India’s top court is currently weighing if the snap decision — which triggered a drastic curtailment of civil liberties and press freedom — was constitutionally valid.
