Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his country was prepared to mass produce a coronavirus vaccine the moment it was ready.
“Not one, not two, as many as three coronavirus vaccines are being tested in India,” he said during an Independence Day speech in Delhi Saturday, Reuters reported. “Along with mass-production, the roadmap for distribution of vaccine to every single Indian in the least possible time is also ready,”
India has recorded more than 2.5 million coronavirus cases and suffered almost 50,000 deaths.
During the festivities, which took place at the city’s 17th century “Red Fort,” the prime minister took his own COVID-19 precautions covering his mouth with an orange and white scarf whenever he was approached.
The 4,000 invited guests were spaced six feet apart and the entire event was flanked by ambulances and medical booths for anyone who felt unwell.
