Sonos has been making quite a name for itself over the past few years within the home audio entertainment space.
There was a time when the company was focused on making brilliant speakers that could be linked up via Bluetooth to your mobile but this has since branched out into speakers that cover all areas of your home.
The latest addition is the Sonos Arc – a soundbar that promises to take the home theatre experience to the next level. Does it stack up to this claim? We find out.
What we like
- Integration with other Sonos devices is fantastic
- The modern and sleek look blends in with your home
- Can be mounted to the wall
- Easy setup
- Works with Google, Amazon and Apple smarts
What wasn’t so good
- It comes with a hefty price tag
- Subwoofer is extra
The Sonos Arc is an absolute beast. There is no other way to put it.
Setup is extremely easy with a cable that needs to be plugged into a spare power point as well as the HDMI cable that plugs into your TV.
On my LG TV, I use a Vodafone TV box that runs Android and the remote automatically replaced the TV and started controlling the Sonos Arc. There was nothing additional I need to do for this.
On top of the Arc there are four buttons – volume down, play/pause, volume up and a function to turn the microphone off if you’re not using the smart assistant functionality.
The new Sonos app is a great way to control what is playing on the Arc – as well as any other Sonos speakers you might have around your house.
I don’t have any other Sonos devices to test this out with, but the ease of integration with existing Sonos speakers is why the company is so popular. This means that you can easily connect other Sonos devices to create an immersive surround sound experience.
Inside you’ll find eight woofers, three tweeters and 11 amplifiers that create an immersive sound experience for your favourite TV shows or movies. The sound you’ll get is pretty incredible for a device that doesn’t look out of place in your home.
When it comes to smart assistants there is choice – and that is a great thing. If you like Amazon’s Alexa you can simply enable this through the Sonos app.
But if you want to use Google’s smart assistant you can also set this up by linking your Google account. Using Google Assistant was flawless and worked easier than the integration on the LG TV.
Music to the max
But it’s not all about watching TV shows and movies with a great experience on the Sonos Arc.
Sonos Radio is available and comes with hosted interviews, custom mixes and artist-first programming.
Outside of Sonos Radio, there are plenty of other ways to play your music through the Arc by using the app. This will connect your accounts from Spotify, TuneIn and iHeartRadio – just to name a few.
You can also play music directly from your phone.
Final thoughts
The Sonos Arc is a home entertainer’s dream. It’s one of the best soundbars that I’ve tested and really lives up to the claims of bringing immersive, cinema-quality sound directly to your living room.
While there is no subwoofer included, you can purchase the Sonos Sub for $999, the bass from the Arc is still very impressive – especially with some tweaking of the sound through the Sonos app.
But it is quite an investment, coming in $1,399 for the Sonos Arc. That might be the deciding factor for most people but if you do decide to take the plunge and splurge, you won’t be disappointed.
