TEL AVIV, Israel — An investigation into the killing of three hostages held by Hamas in Gaza has discovered that the captives have been shirtless and waving a white flag as Israel troopers fired on them.

The preliminary report Saturday by the Israel Defense Forces, or IDF, stated the hostages had managed to evade their captors within the northern Gaza neighborhood of Shijaiyah earlier than they have been “mistakenly identified” as they exited a constructing on Friday. They have been then shot by an Israeli soldier.

Two have been killed instantly and one other was wounded and ran again into the constructing, an Israeli official stated in a briefing on Saturday. Soldiers then heard a cry for assist in Hebrew. The soldier’s battalion commander ordered the firing to cease. The third hostage later died of his wounds.
