JACKSON COUNTY (WSIL) — Health officials issue a public health alert the same day that the county sees a record single-day increase of 38 new cases.

According to Sunday’s alert, almost 70% of the COVID-19 cases reported in Jackson County this month have been individuals in their late teens to mid-20’s.

The health department says these young adults are a source of transmission for the virus around the community.

While symptoms can be more mild for those in their late teens to mid-20’s, they could pass it on to someone who is elderly or has chronic health issues and much more susceptible to severe symptoms.

The health department asks that young adults take these actions to help slow the spread of the Coronavirus:

  • Avoid parties and large gatherings – crowds are an ideal environment for spreading COVID-19.
  • Do not share beverages or vaping devices, and do not smoke or vape in groups.
  • Practice social distancing – keep a 6ft space between yourself and others as much as possible.
  • Wear a face mask or face covering when around others.
  • Stay home if you are sick, even if you only have mild symptoms.
  • Model behaviors for your peers to follow.
  • Return calls to public health officials and follow their instructions.

The full alert can be read here.
