MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — A judge on Tuesday agreed with the decision by a governing body to delay high school sports in Nassau County until 2021.
In his ruling, the judge said the decision to delay the start of the sports season was supported by substantial evidence.
The ruling came from the Massapequa School District’s lawsuit against the governing body, known as Section Eight. The group announced weeks ago that Nassau would push all high school sports to January 2021, with all sports operating on a shortened schedule.
The decision was made before the state began to see a second rise in COVID-19 cases.
Superintendent of Jericho Schools Henry Grishman, who is board member, tells WCBS 880 that he is not surprised by the decision.
“There’s been over 30 school closings on Long Island based on COVID and the infection rate has also slightly increased by Long Island as well,” Grishman said.
While Long Island has yet to report any COVID clusters, there have been some cases reported in schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties.
People who had opposed the delay say sports were cleared by the state to beginning and delaying them will hurt student athletes’ ability to secure scholarships.
Grishman says that is not the case.
“The students that are being carefully watched and carefully considered, that doesn’t happen in the fall of their senior year. Those kids have been spotted and followed very closely by the recruiters, during the sophomore and junior years,” he said.
