HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – High school athletes and coaches received good news today, as the KHSAA put a plan in place to delay fall sports. Most notably, high school football will start full practice on August 24, with the first game played on September 11. The playoffs would begin on November 13 and state championships pushed back one week to December 11-12.

Practices will be helmet only to start on August 24.

The vote for this passed 17-0 with Jefferson County Athletic Director Jerry Wyman abstaining from the vote. Wyman added that there needs to be a date in place before the start of practice to discuss any updates to the plan, if necessary.

The board also passed a motion to begin practice for field hockey, soccer, cross country and volleyball on Monday, August 24. This practice will be limited to six hours during the week. Full practice will start on Monday, August 31st with competition starting two weeks later on Monday, September 7. The vote for this passed 17-0 with Wyman abstaining again.

In addition, competitive cheer can start practice on August 24 as well.

With the motions, schools will be able to play about 80% of their schedules. Football teams can play a maximum of eight games. Soccer will play 16 games, field hockey will play 19, volleyball will play 28 and cross country will have 11 meets.

Golf will start on time.
