With COVID-19 still a threat, staying safe has meant fewer and smaller gatherings, including over the holidays. But if people are taking the proper precautions, it can still be possible to enjoy a Labor Day weekend without putting yourself or others at risk.
While it is still important to limit gathering size due to the pandemic, here are a few options for getting out of the house and safely celebrating this weekend.
Kipona Festival
Harrisburg’s annual Kipona festival comes every Labor Day, and the show will go on even through a pandemic. But in order to take some COVID-19 precautions, it will be different this year.
Online options will continue all weekend, but the in-person portion of the festival start at 3 p.m. on September 5. A selection of food trucks will be in place on City Island until 8 p.m. that night, and fireworks start at 8:15 p.m. Read more about it here:
Fireworks
If you’re not watching big sky explosions, can you even be said to be celebrating a summer holiday in America? Many planned events have been canceled due to COVID-19, but there are still several happening not too far from here including at Kipona in Harrisburg. Check out our list:

Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire
The royalty, peasantry, pirates and knights of the English court are returning to Mount Hope Estates starting on September 5, and continuing on Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day Monday through November 1. Hours of operation are 11 a.m.-8 p.m., and the staff has implemented several new COVID-19 precautions.
For more details on tickets and coronavirus safety measures, check out the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire website.
Take a hike
The great outdoors have been a great way to get out of the house while still staying safe, and many have taken advantage of the numerous parks and trails in our region. So while avoiding other hikers may now be a concern, being outside is still preferable to the recirculated air inside many buildings.
“If only someone had compiled some sort of handy list of hiking options!” I hear you lamenting. But worry not, because someone did exactly that.

Visit a museum
If you’re near Philadelphia and up to risking some potential crowds, you can grab a mask and head to one of several museums that reopen this week. The Museum of the American Revolution reopened on September 3, the Academy of Natural Sciences on September 5, and the The Philadelphia Museum of Arts reopens on September 6. The Battleship New Jersey is also open for visitors until September 7 if you’re willing to make the short trip to Camden.

Check out a drive-in
Seeing a movie is a time-honored tradition in the summer, but it requires jumping through a lot more hoops now. Thankfully, drive-in movies are offering an alternative for people still hoping to enjoy a big screen adventure without being in a building with strangers. Take a look at a few drive-in options nearby:
