MOUNTAIN HOME – Mountain Home’s Kylee Sabella and Kendall Carter each notched double-doubles as the Lady Bombers ended a six-match winless streak against Batesville in nonconference volleyball action Monday night.

The Lady Pioneers came to life in the second set to tie the match 1-1, but the young Lady Bombers finished strong for a 25-15, 16-25, 25-18, 25-20 victory at The Hangar.

Sabella totaled 13 kills and 13 digs, while Carter had 12 kills, 10 digs and three blocks in the match.

Mountain Home libero Riley Schmitz had a strong night on defense with 21 digs, while Riley Straka made 11, and junior setter Kiah Beard made eight, along with dishing out 31 assists on the night.

Also for Mountain Home, Reanna Dodge added three kills and three blocks, Tatum Smith tallied two kills, two blocks and two aces, and Katelyn Hill chipped in two kills.

Mountain Home had last defeated Batesville in 2015 in a tournament at West Plains, Mo. The Lady Bombers split two sets against the Lady Pioneers two years ago in the Valley View tournament.

“I was really proud of this young group of girls tonight,” Mountain Home head coach Jill Daves said. “They had a lot of fight in them against a very good Batesville team. We started strong in the first set and got too relaxed and comfortable in the second set, which you can not do with a team as dangerous and well-coached as Batesville.”

The Lady Bombers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set with kills from Dodge and Carter, and the Lady Pioneers never climbed closer than within three the rest of the match.

Mountain Home committed 12 errors and violations in a sloppy second set as Batesville opened up a 10-2 lead and led the entire way.

With the third set tied 3-3, Carter slammed a kill to ignite the home team. Mountain Home led 7-3 and never trailed again, leading by double digits at 24-14 on Batesville’s ninth hitting error of the set.

“We fought back in the third and fourth set and stopped playing so cautious — and played to win instead of not to lose,” Daves said. “There are still a few things we need to work on, but I am very proud of the girls and extremely proud of the ‘don’t quit’ spirit and attitude they showed on the court.”

Batesville’s Jalise Stewart neared triple-double range, leading the visitors with 19 kills, eight digs and eight blocks in the match.

Stewart started and ended a Batesville run that gave it a 10-5 lead in the fourth set before the Lady Bombers began to chip away at the lead.

An ace by Batesville’s Ashton Weaver kept the lead at five at 14-9, but the hosts eventually pulled even at 16-16 on an ace by Schmitz.

Back-to-back errors by Mountain Home had Batesville ahead 19-17, but the Lady Bombers rallied for another lead at 20-19 on a kill by Smith. Beard tipped for a 22-19 lead, and Carter added another kill down the stretch.

Kayla Ward added nine kills and five blocks for Batesville, while Maggie Vanemburg led the defense with 12 digs.
