The Griffin-Spalding County Library has developed several new, creative ways to engage readers in person as part of their transition out of closure due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The building was closed to the public on March 17 “from an abundance of caution and concern for the well-being of our patrons and staff to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19 through the community.”

In March, library staff transitioned to offering curbside service for patrons with valid library cards. In June, the library reopened to the public under modified hours and with safety precautions in place such as encouraging the wearing of masks and social distancing.

Now, staff members have created new ways to hold in-person gatherings that promote social distancing.

Beginning in late September, they began offering Storytime in the Park cosponsored by Spalding County Parks and Leisure Services. On alternating Wednesdays, parents and children join Youth Services Librarian Bea Mengal at Airport Road Park for storytime. The outdoor event allows children to hear stories, dance, and move about.

Library staff are also on hand to issue library cards and books are available for checkout. Upcoming dates are Oct. 14 and 28 weather permitting. Registration is not required.

Similarly, a new book club, Book Club in the Park, has been launched in partnership with the Spalding County Senior Center. The club meets on the third Friday of the month and is open to readers ages 50 and older. The next meeting date is Oct. 16 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Wyomia Tyus Olympic Park, Pavillion 2.

They have also partnered with the Senior Center to hold socially-distanced craft classes monthly also at Wyomia Tyus Olympic Park, Pavilion 2. The class is open to crafters ages 50 and older. Call 770-467-4385 to register.

The next class is Friday, Oct. 9 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and crafters will make Candy Corn Mason Jars. Registration is required. Call 770- 467-4385 to register.
