LIVE: Late hitting gives Windies something to defend as rising star out to mount World Cup case

Welcome to live coverage of the first T20 between Australia and the West Indies from Metricon Stadium, Gold Coast.First ball: 7:10pm AEDT

Australia have been set 146 for victory against the West Indies, but all the talk is why Aaron Finch has moved down the order.

Asked how much say he had on the decision to move down the order by Fox Sports reporter Megan Barnard, Finch said “All of it”. He added that Cameron Green’s red-hot form had contributed to the decision, with the all-rounder — who is not in Australia’s World Cup squad — to open alongside the returning David Warner.

Former opener turned selector Mark Waugh his out at the decision.

“Well, I’m not sure (about the selections),” Waugh said on Fox Cricket.

“I mean Cameron Green was outstanding opening the batting in India.

“The thing is he’s not in the World Cup squad, so if you’re preparing for the World Cup why would you open with him? Wouldn’t Aaron Finch be opening the batting if you were preparing for the World Cup, so I find it a little confusing.

“I’ve got no doubt about it, if Cameron Green is in our World Cup squad it is a better squad. He’s that good a player. At the moment, you can only get in if there’s an injury so who knows what’s happening there with Marcus Stoinis, Mitch Marsh coming up from injury but it’s interesting isn’t that he’s opening tonight.”

Brad Haddin said the decision made “no sense”.

He added: “Yeah, I find the decision odd, to be honest.”

The left-hander hit the most effortless six imaginable, as he smashed Cameron Green for six over cover off the back foot.

Some late hitting from Odean Smith (27 off 17) lifted the West Indies to a respectable score.

Earlier, some stunning batting from Kyle Mayers left the world in awe.

The left-hander hit the most effortless, clean six you will see as he hit Green over cover for six off the back foot.

After getting away early, the breaks were put on Mayers and he was bowled by Pat Cummins.

Late in their innings, the West Indies are 7-108 with Josh Hazlewood (3-35) and Cummins (2-22) starring.

The mini series shapes as a significant one, with the World Cup just weeks away.

There are still plenty of questions surrounding the make-up of Australia’s squad from Finch himself to the middle order and what role Tim David could play.
