From midnight tonight strict controls on the Victorian-South Australian border will be relaxed for local communities
The South Australian Premier Steven Marshall told ABC News Breakfast this morning he believed the risk from widespread “seeding” of coronavirus in regional Victoria had passed.
“We still want to go that 14 days from the last confirmed case in that area and that is tonight at midnight. So as of tomorrow, we put that 40km buffer zone back in place,” he said.
“We know it’s been hugely inconvenient and that’s why we didn’t want to keep it in place one day longer than we needed to. But we certainly needed to keep our population here in South Australia protected.
“In South Australia, we have opened our borders to Queensland, the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Tasmania. We’re looking very closely at the ACT and also New South Wales at the moment. All of our decisions are based on expert health input. We act as soon as we possibly can after receiving that health expert advice.”
Mr Marshall said he would lift border restrictions for people in New South Wales and the ACT “as soon as we possibly can”.

New Victorian state of emergency deal on the cards
A key crossbencher has been offered a new state of emergency deal as the State Government struggles to change state of emergency laws.
The ABC can confirm the Government approached leader of the Reason Party Fiona Patten with a plan to extend the state of emergency here in Victoria by six months, rather than a year.
Under current laws, a state of emergency must be renewed each month and can last for a maximum of six consecutive months.
The legislation is to be decided on in the Upper House next week.
The State Government needs the legislative change to go ahead so it can legally enforce the Chief Health Officer’s directions such as mandatory face masks and social distancing after September 13 when the current state of emergency ends.
