Knox picks up win over Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. — The Knox College volleyball team defeated Beloit 3-1 on Saturday afternoon to move to 1-1 in Midwest Conference play.

The Buccaneers earned a 28-26 win in the first set, after an intense effort and back-and-forth play from both teams.

An 8-8 tie in the second set was broken by a 7-1 run by the Prairie Fire. Beloit made a run of their own late in the set, but Knox scored the last four points to win the set 25-19.

The Prairie Fire used a 4-0 run to break an 11-11 tie in the third set and cruised to another 25-19 win to take the 2-1 advantage in the match.

Knox leapt out to a 10-2 lead in the fourth set and finished strong with a 25-12 victory to take the match.

MEN’S SOCCER

Prairie Fire down Storm

GALESBURG— The Knox College men’s soccer team defeated Simpson College on Saturday at Jorge Prats Field, needing just a single goal to claim victory. With the win, the Prairie Fire’s second shutout in a row, their record now sits at 3-4 overall.

The opening minutes of the first half set the tone for the rest of the game, as it was clear from the beginning that neither team had a decided advantage in any facet of the game. Both Knox and Simpson traded shots on goal, but neither team looked very threatening on the offensive end.

The Prairie Fire outshot the Storm 5-3 total in the first half, and an Adrian Segura strike in the 41st minute nearly found its way through to goal. Despite these promising signs at the end of the half, neither team made an impact on the scoreline as the halftime whistle blew.

The second half saw an increase in offensive efficiency from both teams, as Simpson began hammering Knox’s goal with shot after shot. Fortunately, Nick Lantzendorffer made several fantastic saves and proved to be a steadying force for the Prairie Fire at a shaky point in the game.

As the half was winding down and a draw seemed like the likely outcome, Joey Dorgan scored in the 83rd minute, sending the fans into a frenzy and giving Knox a late lead.

The Prairie Fire managed to hold on and secure the win, capping off a captivating match.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Knox falls 7-0 to U of Chi

GALESBURG — The Knox College women’s soccer team fell 7-0 to No. 2 University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon.

Knox moved to 2-6-1 on the season after playing a very tough non-conference schedule in the early going of the season.

The Prairie Fire kept the Maroons off the board for the first 13 minutes, but Chicago scored six quick goals over the next 22 minutes to take a 6-0 lead into halftime.

The Prairie Fire kept Chicago from scoring again until the 76th minute.

The Maroons have yet to give up a goal this season, but Knox’s Louise Schoeffel missed scoring a pair of goals by inches on some very good strikes.
