United’s boys 3rd, Ridgewood’s girls 3rd at LTC Meet
KEWANEE — The United High School boys cross country team and Ridgewood’s girls both finished in third place at the Lincoln Trail Conference meet Thursday at Dunes Golf Course.
The Red Storm’s top finish on the boys side came from junior Zair Velazquez, who took sixth in 18:26.1. The Spartans’ Fernando Avila-Rubio finished ahead of Velazquez. The sophomore took third in 17:48.9, and ROWVA/Williamsfield’s Jaren Gerard placed 10th in 18:49.5.
Ben McVey clocked a time of 18:59.3 and the United junior placed 11th. The Red Storm’s Larry Kamara took 14th place in 19:44.4. Ashton Hensley led Knoxville’s boys with a 16th place finish in 19:50.7. Abingdon-Avon senior Rodeffer Micah placed 19th in 20:10.3. The Tornadoes were also represented by Quinton Rakestraw (44th in 25:43.1).
Mercer County’s boys were led by Derek Coulter, who took the top spot in 17:09.5, and they combined for first place with 43 points. Princeville finished with 59, United had 72 and Ridgewood’s boys tallied 90 points for fourth place ahead of Annawan/Wethersfield (105) and the Cougars’ boys (127).
Sophomore Miranda Reed paced Ridgewood’s girls with a second place finish (19:24.9). Teammate Kendra Downing placed sixth in 20:54.6. The rest of the Spartans broke the tape in a pack with Mollie Bennet finishing in 24:11.3 in 23rd place, Brooklyn Humphrey took 24th in 24:56.5, Cassie Mayer’s 25:23.4 gave her the 25th spot, Ruth Losey took 26th place in 25:26.6, and Emma Poppy ended up in 27th place (25:27.5).
Mackenzie Rader and Allie Hopkins ran for Knoxville. Rader placed 15th in 22:21.8 while Hopkins was 17th in 23:10.8. Lily Rakestraw was Abingdon-Avon’s lone girls runner, and the freshman finished in 30:17.0.
Mercer County was the top girls team with 35 points. Princeville was second with 52, the Spartans combined for 63 points, Stark County ended up in fourth place (86), and ROWVA/Williamsfield’s girls – who were led by Emma Seiboldt (21st, 23:39.9) – were fifth with 116 points.
Annawan/Wethersfield sophomore Kennedy Anderson won the girls race in 19:22.1.
AREA VOLLEYBALL
Ridgewood beats Alleman
WOODHULL — The Ridgewood volleyball team beat Rock Island Alleman on Thursday night in straight sets 25-20, 25-17.
Hallica Warren-Anderson had 13 digs and a pair of aces for the Spartans. Paige Leander had nine kills, eight service points and a pair of blocks. Brooklynn Jones dished out 19 assists for Ridgewood.

Chargers fall 3-2 in OT at Prairie St.
CHICAGO HEIGHTS — In a matchup of top-10 teams, Prairie State rallied to force overtime and scored the game-winner early in OT to defeat the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team 3-2 on Thursday.
The 10th-ranked Chargers (9-2 overall, 6-2 Region IV) took a 2-0 lead into halftime on an unassisted goal from Jean Forestal and a goal from Guylberson Camille with an assist by Forestal.
Second-ranked Prairie State (11-1, 9-0), playing down a man due to a red card at the end of the first half, converted a pair of penalties in the second half to tie the game, which was played in rainy conditions.
The Pioneers’ Jahmar Stinchcombe scored the golden goal less than a minute into the overtime period on a cross by Stefan Mazzariol.
Sandburg totaled 11 shots in the contest, with five of them on goal. Chargers keeper Ben Hilton made five saves.
