HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — A Long Island congressman and representatives from local live entertainment venues on Monday called on Congress to provide federal aid to the entertainment industry, restaurants and catering halls.
Kevin O’Neil, who owns the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport, stood at the Paramount in Huntington to warn lawmakers that many entertainment venues will permanently close without help from the federal government.
“When will you get 400 people, elbow to elbow, inside again? It’s going to be a long time. We’re closed at least until March, but I think it’s very unlikely that we’re not going to be open until Fall of next year,” he said.
Laura Mogul, of Landmark on Main Street in Port Washington, says even if the state allows entertainment venues to reopen, the costs to get venues up to code will be astronomical.
“Our revenue stream is gonna really have no idea what we’re going to get it back. We need funding down to support the large capital expenditures to bring our ventilation systems to code and we need to purchase technology that allow us to stream our programming – it’s a poor substitute, but we want to continue to deliver programming, music, art, culture,” she said.
Congressman Tom Suozzi says the House of Representative’s COVID-19 relief package would provide $10 billion in direct relief to the live entertainment industry. Though, it’s not certain if the Senate will approve the measure.
Leaders of those venues are calling on Senators to step up and help.
William Biddle, executive director of the Tilles center in Brookville, says without it, iconic landmarks will be forced to close.
“Tilles Center has been around for a long time. This was the first year in our history that we were truly self-supported and as a result of the virus, we know have close to a million-dollar deficit from this year that we’ll have to work off. Those kinds of thing are not going to go away overnight,” he explains.
He adds that as a non-profit organization, the other thing the Tilles Center has experienced is a lack of donations due to many being unemployed during the pandemic.
